# Puzzles and reasoning challenges

Combining objects changes the puzzle board: one move’s output becomes the material for another decision. Each overview separates player actions, state changes and alternative rules. Examples are hypothetical design scenarios, not claims about a named game. A prototype check states an observable question for the next iteration. Existing detailed references remain separately linked from the direction map.

## Mechanics and variants

### 1. Merging, combining and growing objects

canonicalId: puzzle-transformations--t168
url: https://gamemechanics.pro/en/mechanics/puzzle-transformations/#t168

Compatible objects combine into a new state, requiring players to plan both chain growth and available space.

#### Mechanic variants

- A matching pair produces the next object rank.
- Triples improve yield but require preparation.
- Chain reactions merge outputs without a pause.
- Generators consume resources and occupy space.

Design example: Three saplings produce a tree, but neighboring cells must be cleared before it can yield fruit.

Prototype check: Test a full board: players should see irreversible merges in advance and understand how to clear space.

Sources support particular techniques or methodology, not every family variant. Design examples and mechanic combinations are illustrative.
