An item has a finite crafting budget. Upgrades consume it, so the player chooses both an improvement sequence and a point at which to stop.

## At a glance

1. The item’s remaining crafting potential
2. The crafting action has a variable cost

- Show the possible cost range before applying the operation.
- Let players judge the item base before irreversibly spending its potential.

## How it works

Each craft consumes a limited item budget, making remaining crafting attempts part of a base's value.

## Variants

### Variants

<a id="crafting-potential-options"></a>

- Spend a fixed upgrade budget. <a id="crafting-potential-option-1"></a>
- Choose operations with different capacity costs. <a id="crafting-potential-option-2"></a>
- Find a new base after crafting capacity runs out. <a id="crafting-potential-option-3"></a>

## Design example

A smith decides whether to spend the last crafting capacity on strength or keep a successful blade.

## Context and limits

A systematic RPG grind reference: 110 mechanics and 330 variants in 18 sections. Four layers answer different questions: what the player repeats, what develops, how rewards arrive and what constrains the loop. It covers single-player RPGs, ARPGs, MMORPGs and adjacent management and accumulation systems. Every mechanic has an explanation, variants and a hypothetical example; coverage, combinations and verified game observations follow the catalog.
