The player chooses which area to visit next. Landmarks, unexplored places and resource information support a self-directed route.

1. Information about the selected area
2. Other places to explore

- Let interest and expected discoveries guide route choices.
- Distinguish unexplored areas from visited but unfinished ones.

## How it works

Free exploration lets players choose destinations and visiting order from recognizable world features.

## Variants

### Mechanic variants

- A landmark attracts without a quest marker.
- A rumor identifies an approximate search area.
- A road offers a safer but longer route.
- A systemic event changes the current route.

## Design example

Smoke beyond a mountain draws the player off the road toward an unmapped camp.

Prototype check: Hide objective markers and test whether the environment itself suggests a meaningful next destination.

## Context and limits

Exploration connects route choices to observation, new knowledge and the cost of returning. Each overview separates player actions, state changes and alternative rules. Examples are hypothetical design scenarios, not claims about a named game. A prototype check states an observable question for the next iteration. Existing detailed references remain separately linked from the direction map.
