## How it works

The player preserves a finding with its location, time and collection method so its significance can be checked later.

## Variants

### Variants

- Discovery context: record where, when and beside what an object was found.
- State preservation: photograph a scene before moving an object when movement alters available information.
- Provenance check: reconstruct who supplied evidence and whether substitution was possible within the case rules.

## Design example

Two identical keys enter the notebook with different discovery locations. Swapping those records changes the conclusion.

## Context and limits

A working map of detective design: 32 families and 96 variants. The core loop is to find information, form a hypothesis, test it and explain a conclusion. Answer formats, hints and investigation structure are treated separately. Families overlap, design examples are hypothetical, and released-game examples cite primary sources without revealing case solutions.
